Capacity Building Programme Day 1: Session for Stress Management
The first session of the Capacity Building Programme for the Second Semester B.Ed was held on March 19, 2025, at 10:50 a.m. in the college's Natural Science classroom. Ms Anamika Mary Simon (Third-semester M.Ed. student, Peet Memorial Training College, Mavelikara) was the resource person who took the class on 'Introduction to Stress Management.' She started by stating the definition of stress: "It is a mental, physical, emotional, and behavioural relation to any perceived demands or threats that wear and tear our mind and body experiences as we attempt to cope with pressure." The stress comes from any event or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry or nervous and it is a short bust. The resource person highlighted the causes for the stress, such as work-life balance, work deadlines, unrealistic demands, money worries/career concerns, lack of support, relationship challenges, death of close people, harassment/social problems, and conflict/work-related politics.
Stress can be divided into two types, namely positive stress and negative stress. Positive stress is also known as eustress; it is a stress that motivates one to make a change. Positive stress is short-term, and it makes us capable of overcoming obstacles. She provided an example that related to positive stress. Negative stress is also as distress, which causes anxiety on concern, makes you feel unpleasant, and decreases performance, and it can also lead to mental and physical problems. She also provided some examples related to negative stress, such as illness, parents getting divorced, etc.
Stress management is necessary to balance our lives with stress. She provided some of the steps to maintain effective and healthy stress management techniques such as regular exercises, laughing, meditation, getting a hobby, taking a break from yourself (me time), listening to music, spending time with family, finding a support system, and learning to say 'No'. The resource person also discussed the 4A's of stress management as the following:
- Avoid- Unnecessary stress
- Alter- any situation
- Adapt- To Overcome
- Accept- Understand the Change
The session ended at 11:30 a.m.
